Electric Overview & Experience
Electric Bar on Chapel St is one of the most exclusive venues in Melbourne. Previously called 'Electric Ladyland', Electric was taken over by a new group of owners, with many of the new owners being involved with other venues on Chapel St and across Melbourne. With this experience and expertise, they have reimagined the brand and offerings and curated one of the most popular venues in Melbourne.
Electric Space & Layout
One of the great features of Electric Bar is the cinema style stairs to get into the venue. In the sense that, it is carpented and has gold handrails. The venue itself is self-described as "70's ski-loft" aesthetic, with red lounges, projectors, plants and vintage style speakers. There's a pool table in the back corner near the toilets and mystery room upstairs near the mens.
The Dance Floor depends on what day it is and what time it is. When the venue operates as a bar the DJ is in the back corner near the bar and the Dance Floor is in front of the bar area. This happens on Monday, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. However, during prime time on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the DJ is positioned on the stairs near the smoker's area and the Dance Floor is around the DJ on the steps, behind and in front.
The Electric Smoker's Area is phenomenal. Firstly, because it is extremely social and secondly, you can see into the whole venue and people can see you, so you still feel lke you're apart of what's going on.
On the far side of the bar, is a row of red lounges slightly raised. This is where the iconic light swinging happens. The bartenders grab the low hanging lights and swing them back and forth. The swinging is pretty random but it's pretty cool when you aren't expecting it.
Entertainment at Electric
On the House and Techno scale, Electric tends to sit in the middle but leans probably a bit more housey more often than not. Typically, the music at electric is well known electronic songs with vocals mixed in with house tech build ups. Very accessible to people who don't know electronic music and the good side of pop music for those House Heads.
There are a few days where the music is importantly different, noteably Thursday is RnB, and usually has a RnB band, and Sunday where it is more on the Techno side of the scale. Sundays are promoted by Melbourne giants "Novel" and they brand the day "Goodroom". Novel usually use the day to put on headliners they are either touring or have signed on partner labels.
Electric Atmosphere
Mondays is typically a hospo crowd, that didn't get to go out over the weekend.
Tuesdays pick up around 11 or so and is a mix of 18-20 year olds that have come from Hawthorne Hotel (Which famously does a young Tuesday Event) and 23-28 year old backpackers, tourists and local diehards. Tuesdays at Electric Bar gets very busy
Wednesdays is similar to Tuesday but typically doesn't get as busy.
Thursday is 20-30 odd years old, with a different crowd to regular weekdays. Which is typically more of a RnB crowd.
Friday and Saturday nights are guestlist only. Usually you have to know people that work at the venue and get them to put you on the list. Otherwise you have to an influencer or be influence in the nightlife industry. The other way is to go regularly to Electric midweek and the managers and security guards remember your face and know you are not a trouble maker. Electric is reknowned for getting famous people and celebrities in the venue, including Love Island Contestants, Dua Lipa, AFL players and people of the like.
Every so often, n a Saturday Electric put on a Day party. The annual 'Market Memories" day party is a stand out, with DJs James Oliver and Sean Rault, having many connections to the venue and other venues on Chapel St, the event tends to draw a big crowd.
On Sundays, the crowd depends on the headliner. But is usually a younger crowd and is in the techno and tech house scene.
