Drapht (real name Paul Reid, born 4 September 1982) is a rapper and songwriter from Perth, Western Australia, widely regarded as one of the standout figures in Australian hip hop. He grew up in North Perth, where his father — a jazz drummer — introduced him to music at an early age. Drapht began taking hip hop seriously as a teenager and became a key member of the Perth hip hop crew Syllabolix (SBX), alongside other local artists. He released his first track in 2003 and steadily built a reputation with albums like Pale Rider (2003), Who Am I (2005) and Brothers Grimm (2008). His breakthrough came with the hit “Jimmy Recard,” which helped catapult him into the national spotlight alongside peers such as Bliss n Eso and Hilltop Hoods. Drapht’s 2010 album The Life of Riley reached number one on the ARIA charts and featured successful singles like Rapunzel, earning him critical acclaim and multiple ARIA Award nominations — including wins for Best Urban Album. Known for his clever lyricism, smooth flow and heartfelt storytelling, Drapht has remained active for decades, releasing a string of albums and touring nationally. His music often blends humour, personal reflection and sharp social observation, making him a respected and enduring voice in Australian hip hop culture.
