Suicidal Tendencies are an American crossover thrash and hardcore punk band formed in 1980 in Venice, California, by frontman Mike Muir, who remains the group’s sole constant member. The band is widely regarded as one of the most influential acts to bridge the gap between punk and metal, laying the foundation for the crossover thrash movement. Their self-titled debut album Suicidal Tendencies (1983) featured the breakout single “Institutionalized”, which became one of the first hardcore punk videos to receive MTV airplay and brought the band national attention. With their follow-up Join the Army (1987), they began incorporating thrash metal elements, leading to the formation of the “crossover thrash” genre that would inspire bands like Anthrax and D.R.I. The 1990 album Lights… Camera… Revolution! marked a creative peak, introducing funk-metal grooves and featuring standout tracks such as “You Can’t Bring Me Down.” Over the years, the band has released numerous influential records, including The Art of Rebellion (1992), 13 (2013), and Still Cyco Punk After All These Years (2018). Their combination of aggressive riffs, socially conscious lyrics, and skate culture imagery made them icons of both punk and metal subcultures. Known for their signature blue bandanas, high-energy performances, and strong DIY ethos, Suicidal Tendencies continue to tour globally, maintaining a loyal fan base across generations.
