The Lathums are an English indie rock band from Wigan, Greater Manchester, England, active since 2018. The founding members met through The Music Project, a stage school focused on music, art, games, and media in Pemberton, after being placed in the same project group by their tutor. Early on, their lineup included Alex Moore (vocals / guitar), Scott Concepcion (guitar), Ryan Durrans (drums), and Lewis Halliwell (bass), although Halliwell would soon leave and be replaced by Johnny Cunliffe. Within their first year of formation, they secured a deal with Island Records. In September 2021, they released their debut album How Beautiful Life Can Be, which debuted at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart on 1 October 2021. Their sound is often compared to and influenced by classic British indie acts such as The Smiths and Arctic Monkeys. In March 2023, their second studio album From Nothing to a Little Bit More was released, again topping the UK Albums Chart. Their third album, Matter Does Not Define, came out on 28 February 2025 via Modern Sky UK. Over time, Johnny Cunliffe’s status in the lineup shifted: he recorded and toured with them for several years, but eventually was replaced by Matty Murphy officially in 2023. The band has experienced growing live success, playing major UK festivals (including Glastonbury) and selling out shows at venues in their home region. Lyrically and thematically, The Lathums tend to explore emotional honesty, hope, heartache, and everyday experiences, delivered via jangly guitars, melodic hooks, and a balance of immediacy and introspection.
