Throwing Muses is an American alternative rock band formed in Newport, Rhode Island in 1981 by stepsisters Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly. Although predating and influencing the later Riot Grrrl movement, the band is often associated with the era because of their raw emotional songwriting, fierce independence, and Hersh’s unfiltered, intense vocal style, which helped inspire many of the women-led rock and punk acts that followed. Their early releases on 4AD established them as one of the most innovative bands of the U.S. underground, blending jagged post-punk rhythms with shifting tempos, surreal lyricism, and unconventional structures. After Donelly left in the early ’90s to form Belly and join The Breeders, the band continued as a trio—Kristin Hersh, David Narcizo, and Bernard Georges—releasing a series of influential and critically acclaimed albums, including Hunkpapa, The Real Ramona, Limbo, and Sun Racket. Their legacy spans decades of alternative and feminist-driven rock, earning them a dedicated international following.
